Lori Garner is an award-winning colored pencil artist whose work has been accepted into international and national juried colored pencil competitions. Her latest achievement was being juried into the prestigious Colored Pencil Society of America’s 19th Annual Exhibition. Lori has also been awarded Signature Status from CPSA. Signature is awarded to active members who have been accepted into the international show three times within 10 years. This entitles them to use the initials "CPSA" after their name. This year Lori is also receiving her five year Merit Award. The Merit Award Program recognizes outstanding artists juried into a specified number of shows with no time limit. Lori is an entirely self-taught artist. She started drawing as a toddler—in fact at age two and a half she created a recognizable drawing of Mickey Mouse! She worked entirely in graphite until discovering the medium of colored pencil in 1997. Learning through trial and error, Lori loves experimenting using different techniques, papers, pencils and styles, but her goal for each drawing remains the same: to create a drawing that tells a story, or one that evokes a feeling or invites the viewer to take a closer look. Lori’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Santa Fe, NM; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, WA; Coupeville, WA; Dallas, TX; and Brea, California. Lori’s artist statement: “I don’t just love to draw, I need to draw. It is my solace, my diversion, my relaxation, my unabashed joy, my spiritual release, my selfish pleasure. When I am not at the drawing board physically creating art, I am thinking about creating art. Ideas for drawings are in limitless supply because I see art all around me. With objects or nature I see things in colors, values, patterns, shapes, reflected light, and shadows. With people, I see art in facial expressions, in a glance, a gesture, an interaction, a conveyance of mood, a fleeting, seemingly inconsequential moment in life that I feel compelled to convey. Drawing provides me a tangible means to offer up my inner visions to the viewer.” RESUME: JURIED EXHIBIIONS: 2011 The Colored Pencil Society of America’s 19th Annual Exhibition AWARDS: 2011 Five Year Merit Award, Colored Pencil Society of America PUBLICATIONS: 2010 Art featured in, “Signature Showcase,” produced by the Colored Pencil Society of America.
